Opportunity

Customers want a simple way of exporting a dashboard into a slideshow format so they can share data with their interpretations

Solution

Provide a simple and customizable reporting feature that functions a lot like PPT, with live data

Project Highlights:
  • One-Click Report Generation
  • Fully Customizable Experience
  • Google Slides-Style Report Formatting
The Challenge

Our users loved the simplicity of our legacy report system, particularly its one-click generation feature. However, they frequently requested more flexibility such as whether to add additional details, customize layouts, or adjust fonts. To address this, we set out to deliver a fully customizable report-building experience that would feel as intuitive and familiar as tools like Google Slides or PowerPoint, which our users were accustomed to. At the same time, we needed to ensure the entire process remained web-based and easily shareable, so PR professionals could seamlessly generate and distribute monthly reports to their executives.

My Role

As the lead on this project, I was responsible for user research, prototyping, and concept validation. Through interviews with several key customers, it quickly became clear that users were seeking a PowerPoint-like experience, one that would allow them to drag-and-drop elements, make real-time edits, and easily share reports.

I worked closely with the engineering team to determine which features were both feasible and necessary, knowing we couldn’t simply replicate PowerPoint’s full functionality. Drawing on the insights from user research, I helped prioritize the most critical customization features. After presenting my findings to the project manager, he agreed that providing basic editing capabilities and maintaining the one-click generation experience were key priorities.

The Process

After interviewing around 10 customers, I developed a user persona to help our team better empathize with our users’ needs and challenges. I also created a journey map, which allowed us to clearly identify pain points and opportunities for improvement throughout the user experience. This process of research, prototyping, and validation guided the development of a solution that balanced flexibility with ease of use, ensuring we met user expectations while delivering a functional, web-based solution.

By focusing on the most essential tasks users wanted to accomplish, customizing reports with minimal friction and retaining the speed of one-click generation, we were able to create an experience that was both powerful and user-friendly.

Outcome
  • Time saving – A customizable report where users choose only widgets they want to include
  • Customizable layout to fit different users' needs
  • 80%+ task completion rate and 80%+ satisfaction rating (with surveys)
